Irena Sladoje’s art starts from a specific social and psychological position on one side – wherein , through an individual story, she opens up universal metaphors about “the state of human being” (the cycle entitled Pain) – while, on the other side, she turn superficiality of the universal and omnipresence of the trivial into a real human dimension (video Short Stories). Her analyses, from the individual to the society, link disturbing and humorous extremities and explore emotions in a medical manner, by performing surgeries and putting stitches, or they put facts from the black chronicle down to symbols/ dolls typical of a child’s play. Amidst those extremities, she documents her own migration and listens to the heartbeats (video Home) or she transcribes/ writes down a broadcast of a football match by inserting a rural landscape in a snowy night into it (Bosnian Fairytale, a series of photographs). The intention is not to link the extremities but to reflect, in an artistic manner, the selected and reduced opposed ends, thus creating her own signature
