Vasil Artamonov and Alexey Klyukov

Vasil Artamonov (*1980) Since 2008 Academy of Fine Arts in Prague 2000-2006 Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague Alexey Klyukov (*1983) 2004-2010 Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague The artistic duo Artamonov – Klyuykov have been collaborating since 2006. Their projects primarily include actions in public space, video performances, installations as well as traditional painting, often reflecting on the history of art, primarily Russian avant-garde and cubist art. They are employing the mode of ironical recapitulation of history, dealing with social, cultural and political issues, often related to the development of the democratic system. The jury has appreciated their inspiring approach to the modernist heritage and post-industrial culture. Consisting of relicts of the industrial revolution found in an abandoned factory zone, their installation makes an impression that is both ironic and nostalgic. It shows how deep our current notion of art is still rooted in the utopian visions of the 20th century and the way these romantic ideals keep haunting us. Artamonov and Klyuykov have transformed the no longer needed forms into a monumental sculpture, further shifting them from their original purpose by painting their surface with basic colors and putting them together in a new constellation. Although their works abound with allusions to the history of art, they still provide a precise commentary to our changing reality.
